Flash Equipment
Flash guns range from clip-on units to large, powerful systems generally used by professionals. These portable flash guns allow a greater of control over the degree of lighting and the direction so one can achieve harsh or bright light from all sides. To soften the light the flash can be bounced off the walls or ceiling or a diffuser can be attached to the flash to soften the flash. Other attachments can be used to produce different effects, such as:
· honeycomb attachment has the effect of subtly diffusing the light while maintaining the direction
· ‘barn doors’ can be used to control the amount of light by altering the position of the doors
· colour gels (acetate-type material)or filters can change the mood of the setting with an overall colour cast.
Flash guns can be used to fire in synchronisation with the camera. This is achieved by connecting the gun to the camera body via a ‘hot-shoe’ socket or electrical cord. When using flash, a light meter is necessary to find the appropriate exposure when the flash is fired so as not to overexpose the photograph.
The colour temperature of flash light approximates to the temperature for daylight therefore daylight balanced film should be used when using flash.
