Flash Photography

Due to modernisation most cameras today have a built-in flash. These flashes are not very powerful but can be useful when photographing subjects in backlit conditions or when the foreground is very bright. In this situation the subject’s face(s) can appear quite dark therefore using ‘fill-in flash’ will ensure the subject is clearly visible in the final print by filling in the dark areas and balancing the exposure for the whole picture.

When using the built-in flash one should be careful not to stand too close to the subject as this can result in the subject being washed out. In addition, one should also not stand too far away from the subject as the light emitted from the built-in flash may not reach the subject. Generally, it is recommended to stand within 2 – 4 metres of the subject.
