Polaroid Film

Polaroid film is often referred to as “Instant Film” due to the results that are produced almost instantly where within seconds a positive image is visible. This is achieved by the self-contained development within the film.

As instant film can provide an image rapidly, it can be very useful for studio photography. It is often used by professional photographers to obtain a proof prior to actually shooting the image on slide or negative film. While the Polaroid film back is attached to the camera, studio lighting can be altered and the composition can be adjusted until the ideal shot is achieved. Then the negative or slide film back can be switched back for the final shot.

Polaroid film is available in black & white or colour. The standard colour or black & white pack films are normally self contained and are available in the following sizes: 4 x 3, 4 x 5, or similar. Examples are detailed below:

Black & White Polaroid Film (standard pack)    Characteristics
Polapan Type 52 / 552 (ISO 400)    Develops in 15 seconds. Has medium contrast, fine grain and long tonal range
Polaroid P / N Types 55 / 665 (ISO 50)    Develops in 30 seconds. Medium contrast film which produces both positive and negative image which must be cleared in a sulphite solution
Colour Polaroid Film (standard pack)    
Polacolour Pro 100 Types 79 / 679 (ISO 100)    Develops in 90 seconds. Medium contrast daylight balanced film with realistic colours and increased sharpness.
Polacolour Type 64T (ISO 64)    Develops in 90 seconds. Tungsten balanced medium contrast film.

To develop 35mm film, a Polaroid 35mm processor is required. The following are examples of 35mm films:

Black & White Polaroid Film (35mm)    Characteristics
Polapan CT (ISO 125)    Develops in 60 seconds. Medium contrast slide film with continuous tone
Colour Polaroid Film (35mm)    
Polachrome CS (ISO 40)    Develops in 60 seconds. Medium contrast daylight balanced slide film.
Polachrome HC (ISO 40)    Develops in 120 seconds. Very high contrast daylight balanced slide film.
